I Didn't Want To Talk About Luis Suarez But...........

I'd made a promise to myself that I wasn't going to write about Luis Suarez until the whole 'will he stay or will he go' saga was resolved one way or another, but I've read so many opinions about it all I just had to contribute my thoughts. And to be honest I've got more views on how everyone else feels than I've got on the Uruguayan himself.

Arsenal fans - some of you seem to be against the idea of signing Suarez, if you'd actually watched him closely you would be prepared to move heaven and earth to get him to your club, he is that good, he would bring you far closer to being title contenders than you are now. You call him a diver, remember Robert Pires, Patrick Viera, Eduardo? You don't have any problems with divers at your club, you've proved it. You call Suarez vile, well, he's had a couple of unsavoury incidents on the football pitch, but off it he's a normal, decent guy. You worship the likes of Tony Adams and Paul Merson who have been guilty of far more serious things in life than Suarez, get over it, stop being so hypocritical. You want your club to spend big, Suarez is the best player you have any chance of getting, you should back your manager and embrace the possibility of one of the best players in European football joining your club.

Liverpool fans - I'm hearing the word 'loyalty' a lot, and it's very appropriate. But be completely honest, have we stuck by Suarez because we stand by each and every one of our own, or simply because he is such an incredible player? Imagine Jay Spearing had caused us the same controversies Suarez has, a hard working local lad but with limited ability, would we stand so fiercely behind him or would we be happy to let him go to Blackburn or Bolton or some such club? And look at Stewart Downing, he's worked twice as hard to stay at the club as Suarez has at trying to leave the club, are we loyal to him? Does he get our unwavering support? I think not. Yes, Suarez has been in situations where we could have quite rightly taken a different view and cast him aside, and yes, it would be nice if he showed some commitment in return, but that's not how the world works, and if we were the chasing club in a similar transfer story would we be thinking the player should join us or not? Not difficult is it.

Another thing a lot of Liverpool fans are saying, why would he move to Arsenal? Man City, Chelsea, even Man Utd we could understand as they are challenging for the title but Arsenal are content with their '4th place trophy' every season. Well, lets be realistic about what we are aiming for, we want to break into the top four. In short what we want for Liverpool over the next few seasons is exactly where Arsenal already are and have been for the past decade. Our medium term ambition is Arsenal's current reality so calling Suarez unambitious for considering moving there is a little strange. And why wouldn't Arsenal be looking at Suarez? If we'd been playing Champions League football for the last ten seasons in a row and a team finishing seventh had a player as good as Suarez we would be screaming at the board to go out and try to buy him. Tottenham fans didn't want to see Robbie Keane leave for Anfield but I don't remember any Liverpool fans giving them a second thought when he came to us.

Fans of other teams, especially our rivals - those of you saying you just want to see the back of him should be honest about your reasons.. 'He's a cheating racist cannibal and Liverpool should get rid of him', I'm sick of hearing that. If a team I didn't like (Everton, Man Utd) had a player that caused them as much controversy and negative publicity as Suarez causes us I'd be desperate for them to keep him and hopefully drag their name through even more mud. Unless he was a world class talent who singlehandedly made a massive difference to their performances and results. You all may not like Suarez, that's your personal choice, but the only reason you want to see the back of him is because you would rather face a Liverpool side without him than with him.

Luis Suarez himself - well, where to start? He signed a new contract last summer when we weren't in the Champions League. At that time we had a new manager, a new project and a new philosophy at the club. When he signed his new contract he will have been fully aware that we were unlikely to break into the top four in Brendan Rodgers' first season so he can't be surprised to find Liverpool where we are. The second half of last season showed a lot of promise and if he stays he has every reason to feel optimistic about our chances for 2013/14. He has made plenty of mention of the English media influencing his desire to move on from Liverpool which I find a little bit soft but still understandable, to a degree. So why then move to the capital of England where the majority of the media is actually based? Very strange. In fairness I don't think Suarez has courted Arsenal, I think they're his only real option so far, but if he did decide to move to the Emirates he would have a lot of questions to answer. I wonder if he and his agent are using Arsenal to try to get Real Madrid's attention? Maybe Madrid are letting Arsenal do all the negotiating and will then jump in if a fee is ever agreed.

The £40 million clause - apparently this clause states that any bid in excess of this figure allows the player to speak to the bidding club, but doesn't mean Liverpool have to accept the bid. That sounds very strange to me and if it's true then the players lawyers haven't really served their client very well when that was drawn up. And as for Liverpool, if we were short sighted enough not to include some sort of 'not to a rival English club competing for the top four' note in his contract then we've left ourselves wide open to a situation like this.

Luis Suarez moving to Arsenal would be a double blow for us, decreasing our chances of returning to the Champions League while at the same time improving the team we could most realistically catch. Selling to Real Madrid for £40 million would make more economic sense than selling to Arsenal for a significantly higher sum. I still feel there will be twists and turns in the whole ordeal before it is over though and I doubt Arsenal will have a clear unchallenged path to the player.

I'm going to try not to make much more mention of the saga from now until it is resolved as I'm beginning to find it repetitive and boring, I just had to vent my feelings today. Do I care whether he stays or goes? Of course, I'm a dedicated Liverpool fan and I want our best player to stay. Can I be bothered with the whole soap opera? Not really. Come on Luis / Liverpool / Arsenal, get on with it, make a decision one way or the other and get on with life.

  1. Agree with everything you said mate ,but if he wants to go theres no sense in keeping him ,we don't want another Torres type situation do we with another sulk in the dressing room disrupting everyone.Yes he is our best player but we will do well without him too ,just roll on the new season with or without Luis Suarez ..Y.N.W.A

    1. You're dead right we're better off without I'm than having a sulking negative influence in the dressing room, but I think we'd be better off touting him around Europe at a lower fee than strengthening Arsenal and making the top 4 even harder to crack.

The club will go on with or without him and it certainly won't be the last transfer saga we're ever involved in..

  2. Hi Jay lady LFC supporter since 1973/74. Agree with most of what you say, a lot more sensible than comments on the mail online ! The only problem I have with it is, ok Arsenal are in CL this year but only just, same as last year, LFC form this year has been worthy of 3rd so I can't really see that Arsenal are a big enough gulf to justify a move. But hey it'll all be sorted before too long and there's nothing we can do to influence either party!

    1. Moving to a club already playing in the Champions League would be a step forward for the player, but you're right it's not a huge step. I think for his ability he deserves to be challenging for titles and probably wouldn't begrudge him a move to Real but I'd hate to see him strengthening one of our main rivals for the top 4. I wonder if maybe he feels he's already talked his was out of Liverpool and made it awkward to stay, and if Arsenal are his only option he may feel he has no choice but to take it..

  3. I reckon that you can't really expect a player to stay out of loyalty either way, unless it's a hometown club situation. These people, however large their salaries, are still doing this for a living and while some people seem to think that after you hit "rich as ****" you should stop caring about money, I don't think that's reasonable.
What irks me is that Suarez doesn't really appear to be burning to go to Arsenal and their supporters aren't really that into it either, apparently. I feel like Suarez wanted to go to Madrid and since that didn't happen he now wants to swap clubs either way. Like buying a couch, not being able to afford the one that you want and then going for one that's barely better than what you have, just because... well you drove all the ****ing way to Ikea.

    1. I think you're pretty spot on with all of that and the Ikea analogy is very accurate.

Finances definitely play a part in any transfer though there are rumours we also want to offer him a new deal, add that to Arsenal's famous 'wage structure' and I'm not convinced he'd earn more by moving to them. Going to Real on the other hand would probably significantly boost his bank balance..

  4. Liverpool fans are foolish. Your form earnt you 7th! Suarez would make arsenal title contenders and help attract more players, not just compete for 4th. Liverpool only finished one place higher and had a far inferior defence to the season before and finished higher because Suarez was much more clinical this season. The history came at the end if the season when you had nothing to play for.

    1. Can't argue we deserved our seventh place finish over the course of the season, we did keep the second highest amount of clean sheets in the league though so I'm not quite sure on your point about our defence..........

  5. Hi Jay,
I think you're absolutely right. It obviously is far better for us to sell him to a club not in the PL as this would strengthen the competition. If the club has all the power to decide what happens I would prefer that they announced he was for sale and let the bidding start with a clearly stated deadline. Once the bids are in he should be sold to the highest bidder outside England. If the bids from Europe are too low, contact Real Madrid and offer them to loan him for the next season. Obviously we would be weaker without him but to also strengthen the competition would just be mad.

    1. The loan idea isn't a bad one, keep his value up and help avoid selling him to a rival, though I think if he went we'd need to spend big to replace him and we can only do that if we get cash for him so for that reason a loan probably wouldn't work.

    2. Well, if he goes outside the PL yes but if he goes to the opposition we would need to find a replacement that is as good or better in order not to fall further behind Arsenal. I can't think of anyone available that also would realistically be willing to join us. In my opinion it would be better to loan him to any non - english club because regardless of money we would have great problems replacing him and still keep up with Arsenal

  6. I would still say gerrard is our best player.
I think most fans frustration anger comes from suarez reason for leaving going from media to then lack of champions league to wanting to goto arsenal next week he might say he doesnt like the weather! i think the least the club/fans deserve is some honesty and respect back from a player they worshipped.the reina transfer showed some class from him often rumours of a transfer to barca in 12months.
Bit concerned about our transfer budget under fsg selling torres babel a.carrol saving wages maxi, jovanvic,j.cole, bellamy amongst others lowering the wage bill whilst trying to compete/catch up are we looking at a period where we sell and save to pay for stadium maybe its needed to compete long term but after all are we still gonna be struggling cdue to limited regeneration of anfield

    1. The transfer budget and wage reductions have to reflect the fact that we're not in the Champions League and haven't been at all since FSG arrived. Cutting our cloth according to our income is sensible, gambling too big didn't work for Leeds and we certainly don't want to go down that road.

I know what you mean about the inconsistencies in Suarez' reasons for leaving, I expect if he ever comes to Anfield as a visiting player he won't be warmly welcomed.........

  7. Agree with you 100%.. should let him go..missed out on david villa who we could have afforded..brought torres back for 17 million..xavi alonso for 8 and still had enough for a decent left back.. but we buy players other toure (dont rate) and alberto that we dont know anything about.. come on rodgers pull ur pinky out and spend on a top class level. . We will only be going for the europa cup at this rate, not top 4!

  8. I am a Manc who has been a 'Pool fan all his life. We've seen many players leave Anfield and very few actually do better than when with us (Mikey Owen......I'm looking at you). Torres, Heskey, Crouch, Garcia.....I can name others too. But whether Suarez bucks the trend, (a la Alonso or Mcmanaman) remains to be seen even if he actually does decide to move. I think he'll stay one more season and see how we do.....why?....He'll miss the first 6 games of the season, add a red card on that and the no doubt silly length of ban and he could miss almost a 3rd of next season before we even start. Plus look at the reaction he got at the MCG......unreal. Torres would kill for love like that now. I can seriously see him coming to an impasse with Ayre and staying till the end of next season so that his stock can rise further, he can rid himself of the idiot image he has gained himself if he can have a trouble free season and he'll be able to actually play all the games for his new club as he wont be carrying a ban (unless we do get CL..in which case he'll probably stay). Here's to a trouble free season with the Uruguayan genius......and here's to a CL place. YNWA JFT96

    1. You're right the majority of players who have left us haven't improved themselves in new pastures, but I think Suarez would be different, he has the hunger and the incredible appetite for the game. I've no idea whether he'll stay or go, I think if Real come in for him he may make things too difficult for us to keep him. If he does stay though I'm sure the fans will get behind him as long as he shows 100% commitment on the pitch.

  9. Why not talk about Suarez, he is a legend. An important figure in the Premier League this year. The most important NO.7:http://www.footballtshirtuk.com/Liverpool-7-SUAREZ-Home-Football-Shirt-20122013.html.
